Auckland, January 9. Michael M'Dermott, who was charged with the Swanson street murder, has been further remanded for eight days. His eye has been removed, and it is expected that he will recover, j H.M.S. Orlando was floated out of dock to-day, having been thoroughly cleaned. Wanganui, January 9. A conversazione by the parishioners of Christ's Church took place to-night to welcome the Rev. J. W. Cbnpraan, the new assistant curate. A cordial welcome was accorded to Mr Chapman.

The weather to-day has been very wet, the heavy shower falliug doing good to the country.

At the inquest yesterday on the body of William Kelis, storekeeper, of Waitotara, a verdict of " Death from natural causes, accelerated by the excitement of being assaulted by a Maori," was returned.

Gisborne, January 9. The Borough Council at their meeting last night adopted the following resolution, which is to be forwarded to Government and the various local bodies: —" This council desires to represent to the Native Minister the urgent necessity which exists, aud has existed here for many years, for a continuous session of the Native Land Court for the purpose of disposing of numerous cases of long standing, which have been so frequently adjourned to the great detriment and inconvenience of claimants in this district."

With reference to the paragraph in the European Mail that several New Zealand gentlemen have been appointed executive commissioners at the Paris Exhibition, it is officially announced that Sir F. D. Bell is the only executive commissioner for New Zealand, and that the others are purely honorary.

The question of the employment of boy labour is again raising trouble in the boot trade. About 17 iiuishers withdrew to-day from Messrs R. i Hannah and Co.'s factory, in consequence of a difference of opinion with the principal of- the firm as to the construction of the statement of agreement arrived at in settlement of a strike which occurred some 20 months ago. The benchmen are still at work, but are this afternoon prepared to leave as soon as they finish the jobs in hand. The men assert that in the agreement of 1887 Mr Hannah promised to reduce the number of apprentices to the proportion of one to four benchmen, whereas since the New Year he has taken ou severil boys, and there are now in the establishment 13 boys to 27 journeymen. The Custom House officers and a detective visited the house of Turbot, a stoker at the gasworks, early this morning, and found there an apparatus apparently used for distilling whisky, together with lOgal of whisky. Turbot was arrested and remanded. Christchurch, January 9. At the Charitable Aid Board meeting this afternoon it was decided, on the casting voto of the chairman, to request the Orphanage Commifcte to consider the advisableuess of dispensing with the teaching staff and sending the children to the State schools.

The Charitable Aid Committee report that outdoor relief was afforded to 508 different cases during December 1888. The number in the previous mouth was 495, and in December 1887, 506. Forty-six cases were assisted last month which had not been relieved in November, and 33 assisted in November which did not obtain aid in December.

After a succession of nor'-westers and intensely hot days the weather chauged last night, heavy rain falling for about sis hours.

The Police Court returns for the last year show a great diminution in criminal cases. The charges of drunkeunes6 were only 140 as against 236 in ISB7.
