PRESENTATION TO MR J. C. AUCKLAND.
About 70 gentlemen1 f rom a n par ts o f the Waikouaiti and Falmersk, district assembled at Woolley's Hotel, Waikoua^ on Wednesday evening for the purpose of preying to Mr X C. Buckland a marble clock, as b ßma ll token of their esteem for him. The chair wa3 occupied by the mayor (Mr A. G. Reid), wt*», after explaining the object for which those preuj n t wete sssembled, read the following address :-'-
To 3, C- Buckland, Esq.—We, the unaenvned beg your acceptance of the accompanying clock as a token of the esteem in which you are held by -.he electors of the Palmerston and'Waikouaiti district!. During the three years you represented the old Waikouaiti electorate you won the regard of theelectora there by the honest and straightforward manner in which you acted, not only on their- behalf, but also on behalf of the colony as a whole. We cannot but regret that your candidature for the newly-formed Waihemo electorate was unsuccessful, especially at the present time, when the colony is so much in need of representatives who are prepared to sacrifice selfisl) local interests for the good of the colony at large. Hoping still at some future time to see you returned to the House of Representatives, we »re, sincerely yours. (Here follow the signatures.)
The Chairman then called upon Mr W. Mill to make the presentation, and that gentleman in doing so alluded in a feeling manner to Mr Buckland's services. Mr Buckland in reply thanked those present for this expression of their goodwill towards him and approval of his actions in the late Parliament. He stated that if spared, and they so wished it, he was prepared to come forward as their candidate at the first opportunity.—(Applause.) Tho Chairman then stated that there was another presentation to be made, and called upon Mr C. M'irregor, who, in a few humorous remarks, presented a spirit stand of very elegant design to Mrs Buckland. That lady not being present, Mr Buckland returned thanks on her behalf.
S?A pleasant social evening was then spent by the company assembled. The clock bore the following inscription:—" Presented to J. C. Buckland, Esq., by his admirers in Waikonaiti and Palmerston; and also as a tribute of esteem by the old Waikouaiti electorate for his honest and straightforward conduct as their representative."
