MORE ABOUT THE WAITOA GOLD,
(Pbb Unitkd Feess Association.)
Auckland, November 3.
Yesterday afternoon a number of Te Aroha residents, at the invitation of Mr Smith, proceeded to Waitoa in order to judge whether there had been any tampering with the stuff at the shafts, Mr Pond in his report to the Waitoa Prospecting Association having stated that the unnatural gold found by him came from heaps of stuff at the mouth of the shaft numbered 12. On arrival at the field they examined the heap at the shaft, and concluded it had not been disturbed. Two of the most experienced of the party selected some dirt, and thoroughly mixing it, panned it off in a prospecting dish. A small quantity of black sand remained. The closest scrutiny, even with a magnifying glass, failed to discover the presence of gold, natural or unnatural, or any other mineral. The stuff at three other shafts from which samples were taken by Mr Pond were tested, with a similar result. The residue of the black sand which remained after panning, together with the dirt from the heaps, was reserved for a test. The result of the trial convinced those present that the filings of which so much had been heard did not come from the heaps operated on. Mr Pond was asked to be present at this trial, but declined.
The Cromwell Argus has reason to believe that there will shortly be a revival of mining operations on the Carrick. So far, the information is of a semi-private nature. The effort is likely to be a thorough one, well backed up with capital. . It is understood that private information has been received that the Island Block (Teviot) Gold-mining Company has been succ«s;* fu'l y floated in England, with a capital of ±50,UUU. Messrs Pyke and Brown, M.H.R's, are the local directors. ,
