LIABILITY OF SHIPOWNERS
(Per United Paess Association.)
Wellington, July 19.
In the Supreme Court this morning a ease of considerable importance was' heard. Staples v. Joseph and others (owners of the s.s. Tui) was a claim of £26 for the value of goods lost when the steamer was. wrecked at Wellington Heads in November last. There are other similar claims, and this is a test case. It is the first instance of the kind in New Zealand where responsibility has been sought to bo fixed on jjthe owner. After the taking of the evidence by experts in navigation, the court decided in favour of the plaihtiff for the full amount, on the ground of negligent navigation, which had led to the loss of the vessel.
