KReceived January 23, at 5.15 p.m.) Consols remain, at 100£. The bank rate continues at o per cent, and the market rate 3£. The Bank of. England weekly returns show the total reserves in notes and bullion t0be£12,900,000, oran increase of £1,200,000 during the week. The proportion of reserve to liabilities is 47 per cent. New Zealand -i per cent, inscribed stdck remains at 94£. Colonial breadstuffs and tallow are without quotable change. THE WOOL SALES. The wool market continues firm. At today's sale coars* crossbreds ruled a higher, and scored wools l£d higher than at closing rates at the last sales. To-day's catalogue comprised 10,100 bales, making a total of 29,400 offered. Since opening of these sales 2000 bales have been withdrawn from sale." THE LIVERPOOL ELECTION. (Received January 23, at 10.20 p.m.) The re-count of the ballot papers for the Liverpool election made no change in the totals polled. Mr Neville has been declared duly elected. LORD RANDOLPH CHURCHILL'S RESIGNATION.
Lord Randolph Churchill has published a statement in reference to his withdrawal from the Ministry. His Lordship states that he considered the army and navy estimates excessive for the genuinely peaceful policy which was incumbent for England to follow. His colleagues declining to retrench, he was compelled to resign. Lord Salisbury wrote to him stating that the increased military and naval expenditure was necessary for defensive purposes, and for maintenance of coaling stations, and that the chances were in favour of war at an early date. Lord Randolph, leplying, refused to acquiesce or be a party to joining in the desperate stake for which he saw the nations playing.

Beecher Cowen, formerly secretary of the Equitable Fire Office, Manchester, succeeds Mr Christie as manager of the fire departments of the South British, National, and Adelaide Marine and Fire Insurance Companies. - Mr Hugh Bannister (of the firm of Hankey and Bannister, wine merchants) advises the formation of centres in the colonies to ensure the similarity of successive vintages. The frozen meat by the Orizaba from Melbourne is selling at 4id, and that from Sydney at 4d. The cargo by the Arawa is realising 4f d.
