LAURENCE.

(Feom Our Own Correspondent.) November 16. ' Professor • Black arrived here yesterday and commenced his first series of lectures in the Town Hall last evening, some 50 or 60 were present. Before proceeding he stated it'was the intention of the Government to make the, School of Mines as popular as possible, and it had been decided to bring the school to their very door by holding testiug classes and exhibiting specimens of every kind of ores, so as to enable the miners to form an opinion of what they might possibly be working amongst. He also 'intended to lecture on chemistry and mineralogy in their very midst. The prof essor'g remarks re mine managers having to pass an examination were listened to and approved off. He then showed the test for lead, silver, antimony, &c, &c. He stated that in co-operation with the Lawrence Athenteum and Mining Jnv statute Committee it had betn decided that he should lecture each Monday evening in Lawrence, Tuesday and Wednesday at the Blue Spur, Thursday at Wethefstone'p, and on Fridays and Saturdays at Waitahuna. I am sure the miners and others will appreciate what is being done for them by the' present Government and by tho professor, whose heart and soul is in his work. . , .
