CITY POLICE COURT

Wednesday, May 19. (Before Messrs W. Hutchison, H. F. Hardy, and J. Elmer, .J.P.'s.) Drunkenness.—Three offenders were convicted and liberated. William Roach was fined 40s, with the option of seven days imprisonment. Bad Language.—Ellen Wilson, for makiug use of bad language in Walker street on Tuesday evening, was sentenced to one months'imprisonment. Assault.—Archibald M'Coll was charged with having on the Bth inst. assaulted his father, Archibald M'Coll. The Bench after admonishing defendant as to his future conduct, dismissed the case. Theft.—William Fraser was charged with having, on the 11th inst., stolen a waterproof coat valued at £4, the property of Archibald Macdonald. The coat had been taken from a passage in York house, Moray place, and it was ascertained that accused (arrested at" Waikouaiti) had sold it for 6s to a second hand dealer. Accused's defence was that he got the coat from a man he did not know.—Sentenced to fourteen days' imprisonment. Disorderly Behaviour. — George Palser, John Moore alias Daniel Webb, David Webb, and Edward Recce were charged with committing a breach of the peace in Moray place, at about 3 a.m. on Wednesday morning. Mr Solomon defended. Evidence was given by the police that between two and three o'clock accused, after having been refused admission to the Baldwin Hotel, commenced skylarking in the street, and that subsequently they created a disturbance in Moray place. With the exception of one, all were given a bad character. Palser was fined £5, in default one month's imprisonment; Moore, £3, or three weeks' imprisonment; Recce, £1, or two weeks ; and Webb, £1, or a week's imprisonment.

Aiding a Larceny.—George Campbell (on remand) was charged with haviug aided and abetted Margery Turner in the larceny of some household linen, the property of the latter's husband. Mr Stanford, who appeared for the prosecution, said he was instructed to apply to have the ease withdrawn, as evidence as to identification of the property could not bo brought. The bench agreed to the withdrawal of the caso, but declined an application by Mr Solomon (for accused) that costs should be allowed.
