THE CHRISTCHURCH MYSTERY.
TO THE BDITOB. Sir, —Insurance resolves itself into a question of risks, the- offices undertaking these risks exercising care in their selection both as regards quality and amounts. Were this not done no oifice could continue the business. Tho offices which in Christchurch insured tho life of a working mechanic for sums so large as a thousand pounds cannot be considered to have shown any judgment. It was a rash undertaking for the first office, but what can be said of the second and third, which, presumably with the knowledge of the first insurance, took further large risks on a man whose income must have been absorbed in paying premiums?' Where such temptations are offered for tho sudden acquisition of wealth unscrupulous men will not be wanting. Fins offices kuow well that premeditated fires cause most of their losses. Life offices that iucur risks of the nature of the one referred to may expect to suffer heavily with the least possible delay for appearances.—l am, &c, W. December 26.
