THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
The following telegram from the Premier has been received by the secretary of the Chamber lof Commerce in reply to one sent by him, embodying the resolutions carried at Monday's meeting of tho chamber :— m -,r „ ~ Wellington, July 28. To Henry Houghton, Esq., Secretary Chamber of Commerce, Dunedin. Have received your telegram containing chamber's resolutions as to 'Frisco-service. House in committee passed resolutions 011 Frielay, and were chamber's idea given effect to, I doubt if there woulel beany Frisco service. As to resolution regarding East and West Coast and Nelson railways? unless the chamber is to be transformed into a political society I doubt if such questions come within its sphere, and if it desires to aquit itself of political bias 111 the future, it will wait for the Government proposals before proceeding to condemn what it believes they are. As to the Dock Trust, I recognise that as a legitimate question for the chamber's discussion. The proposal of my colleague was simply to reconstitute the Dock Trust which was previously 111 existence. The chamber's representations, however, deserve careful consideration, and I would -be much obliged if you would forward the reasons given by the chamber for their disapproval, kindly pointing out what" individual or corporation can be injured by tlie Dock Trust being reconstituted, and how the mercantile interests of Otago can possibly be affected.—Robert Stout
