• • . Auckland, July 28. -One hundred and fifty Natives have assembled to stop the contractor of the Rotorua railway from proceeding to lay the permanent way, alleging that they have not been compensated for the reserve taken. They are building a barricade across the line.
In the wrestling match Reaney defeated Pagan by one fall, which was disputed, but which was ailjudgeel to Reaney. Another match is contemplated.
Mrs Bailey, of Parnell, was accidentally poisoned by taking carbolic acid by mistake while under the influence of liquor. , A direct line of sailing vessels between Hamburg and Auckland has been established. The first vessel, the Levuka, of 636 tons, left Hamburg on July 15, with an assorted cargo of Austrian and German goods. The vessels, for the present, are to return home by way of the islands, loading with copra. . J. J. Davis has been awarded £39 damages against the Tramway Company for injuries sustained. Mrs D. Ross, of Ponsonby, now sues for £500 for a broken wrist through a car skidding.
Wellington, July 28. At tho Police Court to-day Joseph and Selma Moore, ou a charge of attempting to poison Mr and Mrs ScarameJli, were remanded until the sth of August. A fire broko out in Henn and Hansen's turnery and wood ware workshop in Willis street at 9.15 this evening. The premisejs were completely gutted. The loss is about £500, and is uninsured. Blenheim, July 28. Ihe employers have conceded the two hours, at any rate for the present,"aud the carpenters' strike has ended. " Ciiristchuech, July 28. Ihe Canterbury Chamber of Commerce has passed the following resolutions :—" That in the opmionof this chamberitiselesirablethaHheSan Francisco mail service should be maintained--'; and "That this chamber is of opinion that a line of steamers running between New Zealand and the ports of Queensland would result in very great benefit to the agricultural interests of the Colony, and it would view with favour any action of the Government in this direction; and it believes that a moderate subsidy for two years would, in its permanent results, amply repay any expenditure on the part of the Colony."
Major Boddam arrived from Wellington this morning, and, after making a short inspection of the Lyttelton defence works, went on to Port Chalmers by the Manapouri.
