GENERAL ASSEMBLY.
LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. Wednesday, Junb 24. The Council met at half-past 2 o'clock, MUST BEADING. The Land Transfer Bill was introduced by the Hon. P. BUCKLEY and read a firet time. MOTION. On the motion of tho Hon. Mr. MANTELL it was resolved that all recent correspondence between the Colonial Secretary and the medical practitioners in Wellington, respectipg the admission of patients into the Wellington Hospital, be laid on the table. ADVANCES TO SETTLERS. The Hon. Mv BA.THGATE moved for a Select Committee to report how far it is expedient that the credit of the Colony should be applied towards making advances, at a low rate of interest, to settlers, on the security of their freehold lands, and also as to the best mode in which such credit may be so employed. Several hon. membors opposed the proposal to pledge the credit of the Colony in such a manner, pointing out that other classes who might be duff ering from depression were equally entitled to State assistance
The Hon. Dr GRACE moved an amendment affirming the opinion of the Council th.t it would be impolitic to pledge the credit of the Colony for the relief of the indebtedness of private citizens. The Hon. Mr MANTELL moved the adjournment of the debate.
A division resulted in a tie, and tba Hon. the Speaker gave bis casting vote in favour of the adjournment of the debate. IN COMMITTEE, The Municipal Corporation Bill, Canterbury and Otago Marriages Bill, Mercantile Law Amendment Bill, Patents Bit!, and Cemeteries Bill were considered in Committee. ' THIBD HEADINGS. The Canterbury and Otago Managers Bill and the Patents Bill were afterwards read a third time and passed. The Council adjourned at 4 25
