BOWLING TOURNAMENT.
A grand bowling tournament was held yesterday afternoon by the Dunedin BoivliDg, Tennis, and Fives Clnb, on their green in Cumberland street. The. entrance-money was to be donated to the Benevolent Institution) and a large number of enthusiastic bowlers assembled to compete for the prizes presented by Mr Max. Mendershausen, which consisted of a very handsome meerschaum pipe and a jar of his celebrated "Fruit and Flowers" tobacco. Play began shortly after 2,30 p.m., there being tour rinks engaged. The green was damp owing to the recent rainy weather, but nevertheless there was some very good play witnessed. Ilink No. 2, with Mr Thompson as skip, was the first to finish the first round, which was for 9 up, the succeediug games being 8, 7, 6, and 5 points respectively. Considerable enthusiasm was displayed at the various rinks, in which the following gentlemen played:— No. 1 Rink. A Thompson.. ..4 R Saundera .. B This concluded the struggle, and Mr Saunders secured the prizes. The play towards the latter end was somewhat exciting, but the utmost cordiality prevailed throughout. Messrs Callender, K. Wilson, jun., and Davis controlled the arrangements, and altogether a very enjoyable day's sport was afforded to both players and onlookers who wore lovers of the game, and the result to the Benevolent Institution, as far as regards tho financial aspect of the meeting, will be very beneficial. A number enjoyed themselves at the tennis and fives courts, and shortly after (i o'clock the tournament closed.
