ASSESSMENT COURTS.

ST. KILDA,

Mr Carew, R.M., sat at St. Kilda yesterday afternoon.

Dunedin, Peninsula, and Ocean Beach Railway Company objected to the valuation-list on the following grounds :—That the Company is inserted therein as owner and occupier of a property described as " a railway-line—part sections 70, 81, 83, Town district, block VII, assessed at rateable value of £400; and part of section 150, Peninsula district, assessed at the rateable value of £800: whereas (a) the rateable value of the said line is less than that of the above; (h) the line is not liable to be rated; (c) the line is not within the borough." —Mr Kettle appeared for the objectors.—Mr W. L. Simpson gave evidence as to the value of the land. It was merely sandy soil prepared for a railway. Except for the special purpose of a railway, tramway, or road the land was valueless, It certainly was not worth £300 an acre.—After hearing further evidence, his Worship reduced the rateable value of sections 70, 81, and 83, block VII, from £400 to £60; and the rateable value of the other sections from £800 to £SO.

William Campbell, the Manse, St. Kilda, objected, but did not appear, and his objection was Btruck out.

George William Eliott, Dunedin, objected to the valuations of £6 and £4 put on sections 14 and 2S, block XI, Mueselburgh, as being above the proper value. Reduced to £3 and £2 sa.—He also objected to tho rateable value of £3 10.s per section placed on sections 19 to 22, block I, Musselburgh. Reduced to £2 each. —He objected, as agent, to rateable value of £5 and £4 placed on sections 7 and 8, block 11, Park Ward. Reduced to £6 and £4. SOUTH DUNEDIN. . The Assessment Court for South Dunedin was held yesterday afternoon, when the valuations on the properties belonging to the following persons were reduced as follows:—Joshua Bccles, from £22 to £17; Anne Pezet, from £28 to £25; R. Hagan, from £22 to £20. Mr Adams appeared in support of an objection by John Shannon against the rate on 12 houses, and in each case the objection was disallowed, the Rosident Magistrate remarking that the valuation was too low, considering the rents received for the houses.

Mr Patrick Carey objected to the name of Mr G. T. Clarke being on the valuation-list for several properties in tho district, his property being assigned to the Official Assignee.—The Resident Magistrate took oiJ the name as being owner, and made it appear as occupier instead
