LAWRENCE BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the Borough Council was held on Monday evening, February 25. Present: Mr M. l<Yaer (mayor), and Cru Johnston, Morrison, Thompson, Chalmers, Taylor, Miller, and Walker.

The Mayor laid on the table a letter from the Committee of the Benevolent Institution soliciting donations either in money or in kind. The Mayor suggested a donation might be made from the borough funds, but after some discussion it was decided that such a course wat not fair to the ratepayers, as the hospital had to be supported locally, and numerous other calls attended to, and it was also stated that a subscription-list in aid of the Benevolent funds was being handed round the town.—lt was resolved to let the matter stand over for. the present.

The Cemetery report, advocating increase of salary from £20 to £20 to the caretaker (Mr Watson), owing to increased work, was adopted. It was decided, on the recommendation of the Public Works Committee, to call for tenders for 300 yards of Glenoro metal and 300 yards of screened gravel, for putting some of the streets ia order for tho winter.

After some routine business had been disposed of the meeting closed.
