The Company did not contemplate using the water from the mains, except in cases of emergency—ouch as a fira occuring, orVhen a pressure might be required, as when cleaning out the boilers and filling them while not under steam, &c. He presumed there was a regulation as to the ei2e of pipe allowed for such water-service, and a rate fixed for the same. — The application was granted on the usual terms, the rate to be Is 6d per 1000 gallons. . From the Inspector of Works, calling tba Council's attention to the necessity of having a 12in drain laid through Mr Innes' property, to connect with the culvert across toe. Beach road, the present drain—a 9in one —being inadequate to carry off the rush of water during a heavy rain such as fell on Saturday, the drain-pipes now in use having to carry off the storm water from Constitution street, Flagstaff Hill, Kaio lane, and Island terraca. Provided the present pipes were allowed to remain, a Sin pipe would be sufficient; 93ft of pipe would be required, the cost of which would be £5 8s 6d.—Keferred to Works Committee for report. The stone wall of the two bywasheß had been swept clean away; an immense volume was coining down the creek, and damaged the road ; while nearly two lengths of pipes were l.<id bare.—Referred to Water Committee, with ■ power to act immediately. BEPORTS. The Finance Committee recommended that accounts amounting to £100 Sa 6d be passed for payment.—-Adopted. The Water Committee recommended that the application of Messrs Thomson Bros, for a special supply of water for boiler of their refrigerator be granted at Is Gd per 1000 gallons, the meter to be supplied by the applicants; also, that tenders be called for the extension of the water supply pipes across the (ieorge street wharf. That Mrs Basire's application to lay a drain across the footpath in Magnetic street be granted; that the attention of Messrs Taylor and Xeod be called to the condition of their footpaths caused by their laying down their respective drains. The works in Ajax road had been completed, and the inspector has been assisting the surveyor in fixing base-line stones, and giving the drains and channels in the several wards dua attention. —Adopted. Cr Allen (chairman of tha Works Comtee), speaking in reference to the applications of the inspector of works and daymen for increase of salaries, stated he was certain it was the wish of the Council and of every ratepayer that the inspector should be adequately paid for his services. His duties were very arduous, and many times when other persona were in their beds the inspector was at work protecting the Corporation property. Tha wages he received were not those of an ordinary labourer. The former inspector received a salary of £12 a month, which had been reduced owing to the state of the finances. He moved that the inspector's salary be increased to £11, and tho dayman's to £9 per month of four weeks. Seconded by Cr Schumacher. Cr Innes moved and Cr Mubbay seconded

the following amendment —"That the inspector receive £10, and the dayman £9 per month." Cr Law was favourable to the amendment, although he did not consider this the proper time to ask for increases; that should be donfl-^ at the commencement of the year when Bp estimates were made. T^_ Cr Pkbbt considered that all wages shofold ' be paid every four weeks. If that were done the £1 .per month increase would only bring the salaries to what was formerly paid. The Mayor was of opinion the inspector and dayman were justly entitled to the increase of £2 per month. He was certain the Corporation could not have better servants. They did their utmost, and were not particular as to what hours they worked so long as they could give satisfaction. He trusted the Council would givo the matter serious consideration and show the men encouragement. The amendment was carried, and it was arranged the increased pay should commenca on the 24th met. Cr Allen moved that Messrs Thomson Bros' application to erect a wire tramway from Lean's Rock to their premises in Mount street be granted, the applicants to undertake by agreement to hold the Council harmless in case of accidenta, and carry out all arrangements with owners of property, according to promise made to the Water Committee on the sth inst. Seconded by Cr Muhray. Cr Law moved moved as an amendment— "That the application be referred back to the Works Committee for report at next meeting, with a view of settlinjr the rent." Seconded by Cr Innes. After considerable discussion the amendmentwivs carried, Crs Law, Innes, Schumacher, and Cable voting for it. WATER SUPPLY. The election of a person to undertake thct supply of water to the shipping was carried 015 in Committee, and Mr John Ross was declare^ the successful candidate. beswnasiojj. Cr Ross resigned his seat at the CouncU foj Middle Ward.
