MR GOYEN'S APPOINTMENT.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—l am much surprised at the remarks which Teacher" made in his lottor on Monday re Mr Goyen's appointment. He aeems to think that the Board should have appointed a local man. I doubt not that a few maybe found fitted for the position, being both experienced and educated ; but why does he put down Mr Goyen's appointment solely to favouritism and " Victorianism?" Has not Mr Goyen proved himself well fitted for the position 1 How-many Victorians have proved failures? Shouldn't the Board appoint those who are known to be fitted for the work ?

Although "Teacher" harps so much on what he reckons Mi- Goyen's abilities and practice in Victoria, yet Mr Goyeri can hold his own when it comes to ability with many of our men wljo have degrees. But he surpasses them at the needful—viz., practical qualificationsas a teacher. _He had a good practical training course in Victoria, before he was a head master. He was thought a fit and proper person for the Inspectorship of Southland by that Board, and proved himaelf so. The Board might have ' advertised, but it knew where to get a good practical inspector, and has been fortunate in that respect Much as I grieve for "Teacher's" disappointment, I must heartily congratulate the Otago Board on their wisdom in selecting Mr Goyen. Par better to get one who is known .to be fitted than to appoint one who would be forced to obtain his experience at the cost of the teachers and the Board. I treat his calumnious remark with contempt.—lam, &c, , „ Victoria. April 20th.
