BURKES TOWNSHIP.

■ ' TO THE EDITOR. c^'T"?o^" 3 ]ast two years the inhabitants ot Jjurlte s Brewery township have been looking forward to the building of (by the railway authorities) a waiting-room such as is at present at St, Leonards (where I doubt there is as much need of one as at Burkes); but now the winter is coming on and no signs of such complaints are pretty frequent, and I must say not without reason. Last Saturday I happened to be waiting for the 5.30 train when no less than 21 persons, including a female and child, were standing in the teeming rain with the intention of meeting the train for Dunedin. Three had protection in the shape of oilskins or umbrellas, the rest standing like ducks, perhaps thinking they were ■ luce ducks—that it would not hurt them For my part, I felt that, sooner or later, they would to have thank Boma of the railway folks (who should long ere now have given this a thought) for their rheumatics. By the G. 30 train I was informed on inquiry that a great number also wero in a similar position on their way to town at tho sanie station. Mr Editor, there is neither a waiting-room nor tho slightest shelter for any provisions (in the shape of a bag of flour or other necessaries), which are daily to be seen'at our station.

Something surely ought to be done, more particularly as it would cost a mere trifle to carry out the desired object. All that requires to be done is to put a cover over each side oE the stationmaster's quarters, which "is already boarded, one side being for the passengers waiting, and the other for goods. Hoping something will be done at once,—l am, &c, Resident.
