Saturday Evening, As the CIO3O of tho month drawa near, business always slackens ofl a little. During the past week, however, trade in the import market has been fairly good. In the bagging market sales of cornsa^ks are passing at 9s to »s 3d per dozen, both on spot and to arrive. Woolpacks have been selling freely, and with local stocks much reduced holders look for payable prices being obtainable, as present rates—3s to 3s Id per pack—leave a loss to imporfcors. Cement is in ample supply, and prices keep down, trade parcels being readily bought at 15s per barrel. Of dried fruits aome speculative purchases have been made of Sultanas at Sd per lb, and with their present scarcity an ad van.cc in price may bo looked for. Elemes are firm at 7Jd per lb. Currants continue dull at up to DJd per lb. Advices from London recoived per San Francisco mail, however, do not indicate thai prices will further recede. Of fish, sardines have run down very low in stock, and as shipments on tho way are almost nil, an improvement in present ratfci, which we quote S3 6d to 8a 9d for halves, and Is (id to 4s 9d for quarters, is anticipated. In the hup market wo report sales of Nelsons at Is lid per lb, and Tasmanians at 2s to 2s Id per ib.; English are almost out of Dr3t bauds. Gal.vanised iron is unchanged, and best brands nro obtainable at £25 103 per ton. Fencing wire has hardened, and for No. S holders uro firm at £10 per ton, although early in the week business was •done- at £15 15s per ton ; No. 7 wo quote £15 5s per ton ; and No. C, £11103 per ton. Painters' oils are in ample supply, and sales are passing for raw and boiled linseed together at 3s 9d to 3s lid per gallon, accordIng to quantity. Colza oil does not command more than 4s to 4s 3d per gallon. Kerosene move 3 off freely, and a considerable portion of the shipment recently landed has been placed at Is 3d to Is aid per gal. i.b. Spirits move oB as usual, without requiring special .comment. There is still a feeling of irritation amongst Importers at tho return to the old method of collecting duty on caso spirits, without opportunity being afforded of clearing present supplies. A shipment of email contents geneva is being quitted at ISs Od to 16s per ease to the trade; large contents (four gallons) we quote Us 6'd to 17s per case. Sugar moved off to supply trade requirements, prices ruling at £32 103 to £33 10j per ton for finest and snowdrci) crystals; yellow arc scarce, aud for best up to £31 lGd per ton is paid. Of Patna rice, we report tho sale of 50 toes at £15 103 per ton in bond. Wo have little chango to report in Vie grain market. Wheat, in the absence of transactions, remains nominal. Oats Ma easy, and at preaeut rates leavn a maigin to exporters to AustralUn mar-' lets. Wo quote K°od feed la lid per bushel; milling, 23 per bushel. We notice- Home advices ara encourag■lug to shippers of barluy, nlthoagh by thin Ume tho .season is pretty far advanced.

:ilr J. F. Watson received a telegram from Lyell on Saturday stating that the United Alpine Company's iioturn was lGOoz of amalgam from '203 tons of stone, jilates only. Mr Hunter received a similar telegram. Air J. P. W&twn received from Heefton on Satur .ay a telogram stotitK that the Wuleoiue Company's additional return waj 11430z of retorted cold which with tho former one of 7(Hoz, makes tho "rand total Of 1007»z. Mr Ilunter received a similar telegram. Captain Baldwin has purchased 2J acres from Mr E B. Cart'ill and Mr Wheeler, the pries paid beiiv.' £1000 an acre; also, 12 acres adjoining, from Mr Ings, at the rate of £100 an acre. Thuso high prices speak well lor fcho future of the Forbury and Ocoau Ue!>ch, whore both properties lie. Wcssh G. T. Clarke and Co. report having sold1 one-eighth of tin acre, Bathgatc road, Forbury, lor £120 cash. Messrs Croskcry, Haaoll, and Co. roport having sold at auction yesterday 1700 aacka primii feed oats, from Jicadowtank Farm, Timarn district, at 2s per bushel, <ex store here. This remarkably low price can onjy be accounted by this market being overstocked, as there aro moro than suflicient oats in Wollington at the present timd to supply all demands until next harvest.—Chrlstchurch Press, October 21.
