PROFESSOR HUXLEY AND EVOLUTION.
TO THE EDITOB. Sir, —Mr.Gordon 3?orlong, in his letter of Saturday, seems to have been misled by the etymology of the word " heterogenesis" into assuming it to be the equivalent of "transformism," or "descent with modification"; and upon this mistaken premiss he has built up an ingenious theory of Professor Huxley's backsliding from the truths of biology. Unluckily for tho argument, heterogenesis has nothing whatever to do with Evolution, and is only a sort of scientific heresy, the acceptance of which would be almcsb ua fatal to any consistent theory of living things aa special creation itself. Probably I know as much about Professor Huxley's "views" as anyone here, and I am as certain as over that nothing short of softening of the brain could make him return to the beggarly elements from which he has done so much to deliver us.—l am, &c, T. Jeffekt Parker. Dunedin, October 17th.
