DIRECT STEAM COMMUNICATION.

Auckland, August 17th. At the Chambsr of Commerce this resolution was carried :—
" This Chamber fails to recognise any advan cages from direct steam communication whiel are not provided for by existing services ; tha* the nominal advantages would bs so question--.ble as to make any large Bubsidy for that object unjustifiable ; that the chairman be requested to compile information supporting tht opinion now expressed by the Chamber, the same to bo forwarded to Sir Geo. Groy ond the Aucklaud meaibsrs."
The president, Mr C- C. M'Millan, ol M'Arthur and 00,, said they had a good test ol ho question in tha voyage of the Somerset shire. They got goods quicker by the Orient ii*:o and tho auxiliary steamer than they coulby tho Somersetshire.
