BALCLUTHA, January 26th.
At a meeting of the County Council today, it was unanimously resolved only to bring a portion of the Act into operation.
Inveroargill, January 26th. To-day, when committing John Burns for trial at the Supreme Court for larceny of cattle at Wyndham, the Resident Magistrate said there was direct evidence to go before a Jury, but it was not part of a Magistrate's duty to make any farther comment. To do so would; be to interfere with the functioos of the Jury. The Magistrate in no way convicted a prisoner when committing him, but if he considered there was direct evidence to go to a Jury, he committed him, and the Jury, might convict the prisoner if they believed the evidence. It was not within his province to say whether he believed it or not.\ Such being a Magistrate's duty, it was not to be wondered that a great many committals to the higher Courts were afterwards thrown out. He hoped that such would continue to be the case, and that there always would be a great many cases thrown out of the higher Courts. R. M'Gown has been appointed Clerk and Treasurer of the Southland County Council at a salary of £300 a-year. There were a large number of applicants.
