FIJI NEW 3.

Auckland, May 9 th. The s.s. Llewellyn ha 3 juss arrived from Levuka. Reports than renewed disturbances have occurred amongst the mountaineers of Viti Levu. In consequence oi the reported restlessness of the Hill tribes, Captains Olive and Carew, with a force of about 200 armed native troops, were dispatched to the mountain region of Viti Levu. About two months back they were forbidden by mountain chiefs to continue their march into the country, and as the object of the expedition was more to keep the insurgents qubt than to provoke hostilities, the Constitutional force encamped at a respectable distance. On the 18th of April the two officers in charge were startled at hearing that the rebels had descended on the opposite side of the rang 63, and had laid waste several coast villages near the river Sangitoto, committing in their raid most frightful atrocities. ::

No precise particulars of the amount of destruction done have been received, but it was reported that 30 villages had been ravaged, and in many cases the; inhabitants —men, women, and children—-being massacred in tha most brutal manner by being thrown into the burning houses and roasted alive. On receipt of this intelligence, Captain. Qlive started for Levuka as soon as possible, and conveyed a statement of the condition of affairs to the Governor. : Meanwhile the coast chiefs did not remain idle. They collected their forces and marched against the mountaineers. Reinforcements have been despatched from Levuka to subdue the rebels. . The other news unimportant. (FROM OUR AUCKLAND CORRESPONDENT.) Feeling in Fiji is reported to be very strongly adverse to the action of the captain o)£ the Barracouta re Steiaberger and Sainoan disturbance. The Governor of Fiji is taking vigorous measures to subdue the rebellion which has broken out in Viti Levu mountains. Gn 25th April the Star of the South left Levuka with 50 stand of arms and plenty ammunition, teats, and general warlike stoics. Captains Olive and Knollys, and Lieutenant Gordon, rephew of Governor, were sent in charge. Half of the3e stores were landed in Nadronga and half in Nande. It was understood that a force from ea jh of these places was to march inland and effect a junction with Carew, and open a campaign against the insurgents, which it was hoped would t-.ach them better manners for the future. This was the position of affairs when the Llewellyn left, and, as might be expected, there was considerable anxiety respecting the issue.

; Dr Carew, who is a passenger by the Llewellyn, deprecates the importance of the disturbances, and expresses his opinion that quiet will be restored without difficulty. An affray has taken place between some of the "Devils" and Christian Natives on the lower part of Sigatore River. His Excellency has thought it expedient to take precautionary measures for the security of peaceful inhabitants, and also to reinforce and strengthen the Police Station at Narancoro. Despatches have been, received confirming the news that some of the heathen tribes had attacked some Christian villages, and that a woman and child were killed.

A letter from a gentleman well acquainted with the movements of the mountain tribes states that no peace can be expected until they are thoroughly subdued. There can be no doubt that an extremely severe fight is looming. The absorption of the Bink of Fiji by the Bank of New Zealand is favourably received in Levuka, the Fijian Bank being crippled in operations for want of capi al and non-settle-ment of old Government accounts.

We learn from the Wellington papers that the Agent General reports, in a despatch received t>y the San Francisco mail, that no further emigrants from the Continent of Europe will be despatched to New Zealand, except in some cases where it is necessaay to carry out engagements already existing.

The Livndon correspondent of an Auckland paper mentions that no emigrants are now being sent out by the Government, and there are very few passengers offering for New Zealand.

Concerning rapidity of communication with England, a gentleman informs us (Lyttelton Times) that he placid a telegram in the Christchurch Telegraph-office at 3.10 p.m., and it was received in Hull, Yorkshire, at 7.7 next day, and found on the oJiica table of the addressee when he went to his place of business at 10 a.m.
