INTERPROVINCIAL ITEMS.
Wellinston, May 9th. ;'.- The Court of Appeal WOS occupied again today with the case Brogden v. Queen, Pleadings of counsel were concluded, Judgment is reserved. The case cornea before the Court in tie form of a demurrer to defendant's pleas, in answer to a petition under the Crown RedreßS Act, 1871, preferred by John Brogden and Sons, to recover £2335, alleged to bo due to supplicants under the Waitaki-Afo?raki Railway contract. Messrs Brogden and Sons' contention has been that the agreement made by Dr Featherston, under which they contracted to send out immigrants, is bad, inasmuch as the j (Governor had no power to delegate to Featherston the authority he used, and that, therefore, the Government cannot, in respect of the immigration contracts, detain any moneys owing to Brogden on account of pontracts for wo/k. The c sse will turn upon what construction is pnt upon certain clauses of the Immigration and Public Works Acts, 1870 and 1871. '. . Napier, Mi»y 9th. At a meeting held to establish an Accliina-. tisation Society, a Committee was appointed to prepare rules, &c. A considerable amount was subscribed. Nelson, May Bth. Mr Lucas, penr., proprietor of the. Nelson Evening Mail, died this morning after a' lingering illness. At a meeting of the Regatta Committee last night it was resolved to hold an Interprovincial Regatta in January, of which the Marquis of Normanby is to be asked to be patron. Mr Cross, the harbour master, has offered a silver cup, of the value of £25, for four-oared gigs. Christchurcii, May 9th. The North Canterbury News, published at Rangiora, has ceased publication, after an existence of s;x months. ' Timaru, May 9th. : The southern railway is finished as far as Otaia, but cannot be opened owing to the want of room at the Timiru station. This inflicts a loss upon the farmers. J ■ i ■• » I AUSTRALIAN CABLE NEWS. I , :. Sydney, May 9th. : Mr Audley Coote is negotiating with the Government in reference to a second cable to Europe. ...... A collision has occurred between the tug Challenge and the steamer New England. The certificate of .the master of the former has been suspended for a month. . Sailed: Easby. Ninety cases of goods from Melbourne were seized by the Customs authorities as containing combustible materials. A Brisbane telegram states that 150 diggers, on arriving at Cooktown, refused to leave the steamer, although the magistrate called in assistance. The crew of the Strathearn, immigrant ship, from Glasgow, mutinied. The second mate ws s severely wounded, and the c ibm is barricaded against the mutineers, who have possession of the forward part of the ship. The captaia ha? telegraphed to Rockhampton, and the police have gone out.
