PORT CHALMERS TOWN COUNCIL.
The usual fortnightly meeting of the above Council was held on Monday. Present — The Mayor, Councillors Bolton, M'Gregor, Innes, M'Kenzie, M'Kinnon, Miller, and Murray.
The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed.
CORRESrONDE>«'CE. The following letters were read and ordered to be received :—
June 19th.
To the Town Clerk. Sir—l am in receipt ef. your favour of yester
day, informing me of my appointment as valuator of the claims of land owners who may be affected by the proposed water works scheme. In reply ,_ I beg to state that if at any time the Corporation are unanimous in desiring me to undertake the duty referred to, I shall be most happy to do so ; but, as I learnt from the published report of the proceedings of the Council at the meeting when the matter was under considelation, that the motion under which I was appointed was only carried by the casting vote of the Mayor, I must respectfully declineatpresent to accept the appointment.—Yours, &c,
■ ■. ■ 0. H. Street. ■ / The next letter was from Mr Massey, the Dunedin Town. Clerk, and called the attention of the Council to the fact of the Council having to elect two members to the Otago Harbour Board in the mouth of June, ac cording to the terms of an Ordinance passed during the late session of the Provincial Council.
Another letter was received from the Provincial Secretary on the same subject, and also a supplementary communication advising the Council that the two members to be elected to the Harbour Board need not of necessity be members of the Town Council.
A letter from Mr Conyers, General Manager of the Itailway, to Mr Reid, the Provincial Secretary, respecting the removal of the old Government stables, was referred by the recipient to the Council for general mformatirn'rf sake.
A letter f rein Mr Alexander Leek, directing the attention of the Council to the damage his property in Wickliff Terrace was sustaining by a landslip occasioned by the road cutting. The writer stated that a retaining wall was needed, the cost of which would be from £30 to £35. He was propared to pay half the cost of its erection. The question was referred to the Public Works Committee. ELECTION OF MEMBERS FOR THE OTAGO HARBOUR ■BOARD. Ihe election of two 'members to the above Board was then proceeded with. The following gentlemen were nominated :—Messrs Andrew Thomson, M'Dermid (Mayor), Dr Drysdale, MKinuon, Dalrymple, Elder, and Murray. The election was conducted by ballot, and resulted in the .selection of Mr Thomson, who polled 5 votes, and Mr M'Dermid, who polled 3. NOTICES OF MOTION. The notice of motion standing in Mr M'Gregor's name, to the effect that His Worship tho Mayor be requested to endeavour to get a piece of the land (now being reclaimed between the two jetties at the back of the Railway Station) granted to the Fort. Chalmers Corporation tor a market reserve, was brought under discussion. It was seconded by Mr M'Gregor, and carried unanimously. Mr Miller asked for aad obtained leave to withdraw the notice of motion standing in his name. PROTEST. A protest from Mr M'Kenzie was read against the action now being taken on the resolution of Mr Murray, and which had been carried by; the Mayor's casting vote, anent securing the services of a valuator for land and rights affected by the proposed Water Works. The pleas advocated were— j Firstly^ that the Council was not in posses- ! sioriof apian of the proposed works, and, that such an appointment wasin direct violation of the 4ih clause of the Water Works Act, 1872. | MISCELLANEOUS. | Mr Bouros moved—•' That Mr B'air, the District Engineer, be written to, directing his attention to the impassable state of the road at Mussel Bay, ami requesting him to have the said road put in proper repair according to the terms of agreement between the Government and Corporation. Seconded by Mr M'Greuok, and carried. It was then resolved,. upon a conversational discussion, that the Public Works Committee should take immediate action to place the Cemetery Road in thorough repair. The Council then adjourned.
