"MASTER HUMPHREY" AND "A COUNTRYMAN."

TO TJTK EIiITOU. •Sin—A letter appeared in your issue of to-dap signed "Townsman," which struck me as being a straightforward and clear view of "Master Humphrey's"effusions,a# they are termed by another of your corrc«pondf?nts. Now, Sir, although I have not the leasi idea who either of the aforef aid gentlemen i«, I venture to say that any man in his senses muKtadmit that wearing "yellow spectacles," " being a wretch," &c, can have no effect on the fttibjvctfi treated of, uh "Townsman" rightly observes. Sir, trusting you will excuse my trespassing on your time.—l am, Ac., PowriKKMi.''.'. Crcat King street, 14th Nov. ,

TO TUB KlX'lOf'i. Silt -Your correspondent "A Counlryman " has already roceived a well merited " heckling" for his abusive language to your other correspondent " Alas tor Humphrey," but I may nevertheless be excused for adding a " few words" on the mhjeet "A (Countryman" states that "Master Humphrey" should dcv !c hi mite! f to averting or curing the evils he writes about, rather than to dwelling upon them. Well, suppose we accept the doctrine, does it i»ot apply with equal force to " A Countnmm" ? If he thinks that "Master Humphrey " in Hulfering from "severe dyspepsia," why does he not tell him what to do to be cured, instead of taunting him with being a Pilferer from that malady ? Whatever may be the casein the country, in the town it h not usually considered charitable or gentlemanly to taunt a person with not being in good health. Whether " Master Htmiplsrey " i« a Hi;fl"--rer from dyspepsia or not, doon not matter. " A Countryman " considers that h« is, and yet flings his alleged sufferings in his face, an if they were crimes instead of misfortunes. Surely it must bo a poor cause that has need of such tactics and such defenders.—lam, &c, November 1-Hli. Modkkatiov.
