Rice, by private telegram, ib in Melbourne steady at last quotations In spirits, little business lias been dons, but prices are well maintained. Sugar remains unaltered. Telegram advices report the Melbourne market very firm, improved rates. Quotations are—white crystals, £44 . 10h ; yellow crystals, £42 1O«. In tea there is no improvement to note. A better enquiry i« said to exist in Sydney in consequence of China advices: Galvanised iron is now 'entirely out of importers' hands, and ironmongery houses are soli out of first brands. Home, advices report a further advance of £2 per ton. Stocks of blasting powder ar& now very much reduced, in all they may be reckoned as considerably under 300 kegs, the largerportion of these being held by one firm. The Napier, overdue, has only a few tons—ten or even lena. The price ruling at present i* from lOd to 1«, almost certain to advance further. For slatea (Duchesses), an extreme figure is asked by the only holders in town, and their stock is reduced to a few thousands, Caustic soda and soda crystals are scarce, and at extreme prices. Sales of kerosene continue to be made at 2s Id in bond. Candles Temain firm at late slight;advance** but the demand is moderate. In hops and malt there is no business" of, importance to note. Tasmanian bops in Melbourne are at £1110s. Malt, ;by advices; from Melbourne, has an upward tendency';; market value, 9s to 9s 3d.

Messrs Wukjht, Stepjienkon, and Co. retort, for the week ending 13th July, as fol-

lows :—

Fat Cattle.— There wan a full market, 84 bead having been yarded. We sold 70 head, at prices <squ*l to 17s to 20s per lOOlba, which figures may lw taken as current rates. Fat Sheep.—The supply keeps inadequate to the demand. 550 were penned and Bold mi follows :—Half-breds, IGb to 19s each ; merino, wethers, middling quality, t H» ikl; do' ewes, 7b 9d. We quote prime' mutton 3|d to 3Ad per lb. Store Cattle. —We have several fine herds in liand for sale, but do not look for any movement in thin class of stock until spring. We quote bullocks, 3 to 5 years, C 5« to 70s per head j mixed herds, 42s Cd to 45b. Store Sheep.—No transactions. Horses.—-Strong heavy draught horses are in good demand, but light, and inferior animals are mute unsaleable. We Bold, on account of Mr Thos. Bookless, 12 heavy draught mares and geldings, ex Albion, from Melbourne, at from £28 to £51 per head ; also, on account of Mr D. Coruan, some wellbred colts, by " England Still " and "Colonel," at from £18 to £26. On Thursday, 18th inst., we shall offer at our yards, on account of Messrs Froudfoot, Oliver, and Ulph, 18 very superior draught mares and geldings. We (juote first-class draughts, £45 to £55 ; medium ditto, £25 to £30; good hacks, and light-harness horses, £18 to £2G ; middling ditto, £9 to £12 ; light and inferior. £3to £G. ... ;

Grain.—Tliere is scarcely any change to note since our last report. Good samples of wheat are worth 5s 3d to 5b Od per bushel. Oats may be quoted at Is lOd ty2s, for milling qualities ; and Is 9d to Is lOd, for feed. Barley—good malting in request at 5s 3d to 5s 6d.

Messrs Driver* Stewart, and Co.'s re port for week ending 13th July :—

Fat Cattle.—ss head were yarded at Kaikorai on Wednesday, all of which were disposed of at about our late quotations—say 20s to 21s per lOOlbs for prime quality, and 108 to 17s per JOOlbs for ordinary to medium. We have sold 30 head privately- at 20s per lOOlbs.

Fat Sheep.—sfso were penned at the Kaikorai Yards, which we sold as follows: — Crosa-breds, 15« 9d each ; merino wethers, 10s 9d to lls 9d ; do ewes, 6s 6'd to 7a 3d. Prime nuvliton is getting scarce, and readily saleable at 3Jd per lb. We have gold 400 privately at quotation. Store Sheep of all classes are in demand, but buyeru still decline to n.eet the views of holders; consequently wo have no transactions to report. ' Store Cattle.—A few lots change hands privately, but the demand ialimited; Stations.—There are several buyers in the market, and good properties would command fnir values, but we do not anticipate any important transactions until after shearing. , Wool.—-None offering. Sheepskins.—No sales have been held during the week. Privately, however, there i«j a fair demand at about late quotations, but the tendency of the market is towards easier ratass. We shall ofler about 1000 at auction on Wednesday next. New Zealand Hemp is in active request, with but little or none offering. We quote £19 10s to £26 as the range-of prices for inferior to light well dressed qualities. At rthe former figure we have placed about 40 'bales, low quality. < ■ . > Grain.—wheat continues firm, with an, upward tendency ; quotations, 5s 3d to 5s G&. Barley, prime malting samples, are held for 5s 9d; transactions, 5« 4d to 5s 7d.
