CLUTHA RACES.

(Bruce Standard.)

FIKST DAY.

On Thursday the weather in the early part of the forenoon was extremely threatening, and indeed there were one or two heavy showers of rain, consej quently there were fewer persons present on the course than was anticipated. People residing at a distance were naturally afraid of starting ; but after all the day brightened up about noon, the sun showing out brightly, dissipating the clouds that wore so gloomy an aspect in the morning. The heat was intense in the afternoon, and nothing short of special interest in the various events could compensate for the discomfort of the oven-like temperature that prevailed. All the usual conveniences at races were, however, to be obtained in variety and abundance ; and dtiring the interval between the various races these were patronised very generally. Good order prevailed throughout—due to the excellent arrangements of the stewards—Mr James Davidson making an efficient Judge ;Mr T. Pollock, starter; and Mr R. Barr, Clerk of the Course.
