OUR DEFENPES. TO THE EDITOR.
Sib—Seemg the men-of-war on out stations are to be called home, no doubt for the del fence of the." anng little island," we should stir ourselves up for self defence—hot Otago alonei but the whole ; island. I would TS' commend that the Government at once send home for: one. ofrthe old woSden waUs of Old England; not only as a nucleus of de-^ fence, but for the purpose of educating desti> feute boys, and training them to defend themselves with arms. Our' naval companies could also be drilled 6n board the Bhip. All that would be regnired to manage her would be a boatswain, schoolmaster, and eergeant. If such a training ship was established^ it would be the means of easing the Oaversham .Reformatory of its crowd, besides doing a general good to the community/ I feel cer-: tain that the freight out would, pay the expenses of sncLi a wooden wall. .
As regards other defences, I would recommend that a commission should be at once appointed, by Government to report on the beat, and most economical means.' .. Hoping this will elicit the viewa of others, I aitf, &c. Port Chalmers; ;"'• ■ '*'_ iFmxnsdrY.'
