THE MAYORALTY.

To the Editor of the Otago Daily Timtts. Sir—Asacitizenof Dunedin I really cannot conceive the desirability of one person mo: oSolieing the civic chair. I consider that by to , oing ho i» obstructing th« development dt municipal ability among as. New blood in. this and kindred institutions would no doubt bo highly beneficial, and iB exceedingly desirfti 10. My private opinion (and I know it" is tho opinion of numerous ratepayers), i* that our present Mayor, Mr Birch, fromlha exalted position ho now hQ}toj£&*™BZ22!!}Z, titivo of this city in Parliament, Bhould bob souk re-election aa Mayor. Hehasnowheldth* office for two terms and as there are Councillors, in every renpectcoTOpotent to fill tho position ho holds, I maintain that in commoa ho—nefity this, the chief honour given by the ratepayers, should bo conferred oa one of tho present Councillors. I would not for^ * moment suggest the advisability of inducing one outside the present Council to come forward. If so, there would >e no inducement to dovolope the.unbnundod talent we posses* in our midst. In other places I find thattha Mayo- is chosen fromthcreturnedCouncillor*. If this plan was adopted in thin place» X doubt not but the election would be satisfactory to tho ratepayers. I sincorrly trust the ratepayers will Bcriously weigh over those matters before aoing to the ballot.—l am. &o. t Frederick Bowkb, Dunedin, 9th July. George street.
