SUFFERERS BY THE STORM.
(To the Editor of the Otaoo Daily Tisibs.
Sik—l learn that the Committee appointed by the public meeting held afc flic Post Office will hold their first meeting at the City Council Chambers on Monday afternoon, for the purpose, as the motion has it,^ "..of inviting applications from, all requiring reliof, or who are in 'actual distress."
I have the utmost confidence in the gentlemen composing the Committee. I feel sure they will .do all they can to relievo al! real distress, both promptly and delicately, like Christian gentlemen. At the same time 1 should like to Bay a few words on -behalf of the ship wrecked Ream en.
Their case was feelingly alluded-to. by Mr Bathgato at tho inooting, but quite ignored by all the oilier speakers, tho majority of whom, indeed, seemed determined to ignore the existence of any distress whatever.
I am sure tho good people of Dune-din will not withhold their liberal and prompt assistance, as well as their warmest sympathy, from the poor men who have been thrown penniless and half-naked' on our shores. I believe tho people of Oamaru and Timaru were most kind in relieving their immediate'necessities; and I trust the Dunedin Committee will not forget them.
It will t)e a long time before the cap-, tains and officers can replace their instruments, charts, books,'clothes, &c. f without which they cannot go to aea, any more than the carpenter can go without , las tool-chest, or any seaman without clothes. The sufferers in. this case may not feel, inclined to solicit aid ; seamen, as a rule, are the most generous in relieving distress, but the last men' in the world to bog for help for theniHelves. However,!! believer that whore help is wanted and generously offered, it will be gratefully accepted.—l am, &c., G. F. IIEID. High street, Ihmedin, - loth February, 18G8.
