The Hero, with the English Mail on board, arrived at Port Chalmers, shortly afternoon, yesterday. At an ea'lyhourin the afternoon, a " Daily Times" Extraordinary was issued, containing the European and American news in detail, and the most important items of Intercolonial intelligence. A supplement to the present number, enables us to give our London and Melbourne correspondents' letters, and local news of more than ordinary interest. Mr Martin Slioll has accepted a requisition from the burgesses of 801 l Ward to become a candidate for the representation of the Ward in the City Council.

A correspondent informs us that at a meeting of the electors of East Taieri on Tuesday evening, Mr Macandrew, one of the candidates lor the representation of Bruce, addressed them. On the following day he proceeded to Waihola, where he was well received by a number of old residents on his arrival. A meeting was held at the School-house, at winch Mr D. M'lVTaster was chairman. Mr Macandrew explained his views on the various political topics of the day; after which, a vote was unanimously passed, affirming that he was a fit and proper person to represent the Electoral District in the Asscmblv.

The building arrangements being now in a sufficient state of forwardness, it has been determined by the Committee, should the weather prove favorable, that the foundation' stone of the Benevolent Institution should be laid at two o'clock tliis afternoon. From the great interest manifested by all classes in the success of the Institution, the ceremony is likely to attract a great number of persons to witness it, and wejtrust that the weather may prove propitious.

We remind the members of the Church of England resident in the district, that the new Church of All Saints, in Cumberland street, will be opened for divine service to-morrow.

A large map of " Dunedin and Port Chalmers, with surrounding districts," has just been printed and published by Messrs Fergnsson and Mitchell. The map, which is very clearly and well executed, and contains a great deal of information as to the areas of reserves and sections, was prepared from actual surveys by Mr David Henderson, and was also lithographed by that gentleman. It shows the coast line from Blueskin B*y to the Kaikorai, and nearly all the country that would be included by lines projected west and north from those points. Mr Henderson was, we understand, connected with the Survey Office here, until extensive redactions were made recently in the different Government departments. We learn by the " Ly ttelton Times" of the 14th inst, that our townsman, Mr Alexander Cairns, has been the successful tenderer for the new iron screw pile jetty, which is to be erected on the extension of the Government Wharf at Port Lytteiton—-this method of wharf construction being determined upon in preference to timber piles, which have been found from experience of the recently constructed wharf at Wellington to be assailed by the worm. The tendering stood thus : — Iron work done in the Province : B. Armitageand Co., Li 1,014 ; Newton and Barnes, L! 0,850 ; George Scott, LIO.160; E. J. Wright, L 9.380. Iron work from Great Britain .- E. J. Wright, L 7,755; George Holmes and Co, L 7.525; Alex. Cairns, L 7.299. The works are to be finished in twelve months. Messrs Carey and Herbert took a benefit at the Princess Theatre last evening. The programme was a very long one ; the last piece being "Jessie Brown, or the Relief of Lucknow," in which Miss Aitken took her old part of the [heroine. The house was but thinly attended.
