COMMERCIAL

Daily Times Office, Thursday evening. Although the Cu6tom House was open for the transaction of business to-day, no revenue was received. By the Albion, which arrived last night from Melbourne via Ilokitika and Lyttelton, we have Melbourne news to the 3rd instant. We extract ihe following report from the " Argue" of that date : — In the import market to-day complaints of the dullnesses trade generally have been very prevalent, and few transactions of importance can bo recorded. We note in breadstuff's a decidedly healthier tone. The millers have shown more desire to purchase wheat than they formerly did. Four thousand bushels Adelaide wheat were placed at a shade under 9s, and still larger operations might have been completed, if a slight concession on 93 had been made. The proposal, however, was not accepted. Holders of flour are also firm ; for Myone Mills anything under L2O is refused. For Adelaide country brands L2O 10a wou'd be taken; L2l is asked for town brands. Our report this morning of the vessels stated to be on the way with breadstuff's from Chili for

the colonies is substantially correct, though an evident mistake has been made in the name of the vessel supposed to have been the T. 13. Boyd, ac, on turning to cur Adelaide files, we find the craft in question was in port in South Außtni!ia on the 26th Apiil. The mihtnke, however, is only in the name of the vessel. The shipment of salt by the City of Melbourne—2so tons —has been disposed of for another market at a price, in the bay, equal to L4ss in Melbourne. A parcel of gunny bags has bean quitted at 10a G!. Sales of fjood ordinary congou teas have been made

at Is IJd, a pnrcel of half-chests having realised this price. There are inquiries for ale in bulk for exportation, though these have not yet resulted in any business. Sales of castor oil in case are reported at 4s 3d. Kerosene has been relieved of the pressure to sell, exhibited lately by holders. The market is more buoyant, and as buyers become more anxious to trade, higher rates are demanded, though

there were not only ready sellers yesterday, but sales at 3s sd. We hear that that figure

has in vain been offered to-day. Provisions continue to be disposed of at extreme rates. There have been trade sales of Varey's hams at Is 3d. Crushed sugar has been sold in bond, the small balance of a shipment, at L 45. The chief feature of interest for the day, however, was the auction sale of Mauritius sutjars, the whole of which, amounting to 5960 bags, was diposeil of. In this Btaplo we have hoard of no sales privately, but we learn that one or two considerable transactions are now pending. By telegraph we leurn that Messrs Prost, Kohler and Co., of Sydney, have suspended payment. The liabilities are stated at over L 50,000 and the assets at over L 30.000.

An Adelaide telegram of the Ist instant reports :—

The stocks of breadstpfls on hand now are about the same as at this date last year ; but the exports from Ist January to 27th May show a falling-off of 15,249 tons, as compared with those of 1864. Bran is very scarce, and is eagerly bought up at Is Cd. There are no sellers under this figure. Cape barley much wanted. The corn market to-day is very steady. Wheat firm at 7s 8d at Port. There have been sales at that price, but holders are now asking an advance. Several sales of flour have occurred at Ll7 to LlB 10s. Import business is vory dull, and transactions are limited to trade orders. Copper, LBB at Port.

BIETH. On the Ist June, at Btoneburn, this wife of Cap It. Montgomerie, of a son.
