The O. S. SI Co.'s R. M. s.s. Albion, Capt. 'John M'LHehlan, left Port Philip Heads at 7.30 p.m., 3rd June. Had W. and S.W. winds during tlie passage to Hokitika, where she arrived on the Bth at 4.45 p.m., after a rapid pnssnge of 4 days 20 hours; left at 11.45 a.m. 9th inntanr, arrived at Nelson at 9.45 a.ia. 10th instant; left on the 11th at 8.15, a.m.; arrived at Wellington at 5.50 p.m same day; left at 2.30 p.m. 13th instant, and arrived at Lyttclton at 0.45 a.m. on the 14th; left at 8.30 p.m. same day, arrived at Port Chalmers at 4 p.m. on the 15th inst. We learn from Captain Thomas Zealand, of the cutter Jane Williams, of Dunedin. that that vessel was lost on the bar at Hokitika, on the 4ih instant. She was from Itiverton, laden with oats, potatoes, and timber. On taking the bar, her rudder was unshipped, when she became unmanageable and went ashore, the sea making a e'ean breach over her. At the same time, the schooners Mnry Ann Christina, and Sisters, were lost. The Jana Williams was owned by Messrs Whtttingham Bros., and was uninsured.

"Australian Lrx>Yn's."— The recentlyestablished Australian Lloyd's Society is progressing satisfactorily. For several weeks past we have had to record the classing of vessels of various kinds, showing that the shipping interest is becoming alive to the advantages of some such reliable registration nnd clasßißciition, Lnst week a new-built brigantine, the Pioneer, received her character from the society prior to sailing on her first voyage, and it is to be hoped she will ba followed by others of our own building. On a former occasion, a vessel was brought under the certificate of the society which hal originally received a character from the American Lloyd's, and to-day, in another column, a meeting is reported, at which a brig, built in the North of Europe, and originally classed at the French Society Veritas, has received hercharacter after being duly examined by the Society's Surveyors. Some sucl> recognised body for testing fairly and satisfactorily the seagoing qualities and condition of vessels trading between the Australian ports was urgently required, and it is gratifying to note that the effort to supply the want \g proving co successful. Ail parties share in the advantages of such an institution. It offers nn additional guarantee to the travelling public and to the shipper of merchandise, it is a protection to the insurance officers, and the owner is at the same time a considerable gainer by the reduction he obtains in effecting his iusurance.—"Argus."
