NORTHERN NEWS
THE ALLEGED SUBMISSION OF WILLIAM THOMPSON.
By the Prince Alfred, from the North, which reached Lyttelton just m the Gothenburg was leaving the harbor, we have a copy of the Daily Southern Cross of June 2, which-raises considerable doubt as to the true meaning of the agreement entered into between Thompson and other chiefs, and Mr Graham acting on the part of or with the sanction of the General Government. It will b?seen that our Christchurch telegram states that the report of the submission was confirmed. The question raised by the Southern Cross is, whether the interpretation of the Maori terms employed in the covenant, is to the effect that the claim of the Maori King to the excercise of independent sovereignty over the natives has really been abandoned, or that the chic's consent only to an arrangernent under which the King would carry out the English laws for the protection of the Maoris, as a magistrate deriving his authority from Her Majesty's Government.
