THE GOLD FIELDS ELECTION.
DECLARATION OB 1 THE POLL.
The declaration of the poll for the election of a member of the House of Assembly for the district of the -Gold Fields, took place at Lawrence, Tuapeka, on Wednesday, 7th June, at noon. Only about half a dozen persons were present, and there was no speechmaking or excitement of any kind, as not one of the candidates put in appearance.
The Returning Officer (11. W. Robinson, Esq.), before declaring the poll, stated that he had received a protest from one of the candidates, Mr J. B. Bradshaw. The Returning Officer read the protest, which was to the effect that Mr Bradshaw objected to the validity of the election, in consequence of the Deputy Returning Officer at Nevis not having received his official instructions to hold a poll until after the hour when the poll should have closed. The Returning Officer said that notwithstanding the protest, he should declare the poll, as he had received information that the DeputyReturning Officer had been properly sworn in, and was in attendance at the polling place, and that no elector had presented himself to record his vote.
The Returning Officer then read the state of the poll, and declared Mr Charles E. Haughton to be duly elected.
The voting was as follows : —
