Experienced strong westerly winds. Off the Solander, blowing hard from the west, passed the Aldinga at 9 a.m. on Sunday, and lighted the Hero on the same day at aDCbor under the shelter of Stewart's Island. Landed mails and passengers at the Bluff, leaving on Sunday night. In addition to general cargo, has 480 fine Leicester sheep on decu. The barque Australasian Packet, already reported, reached the anchorage in the forenoon, and is now discharging some of her fruit prior to proceeding to town. She brings a large mixed carge of Tasmanian produce, with fowls and similar live stock on deck. L?ft on the 11th, and arrived at. the Heads on Saturday, with fine weather at firtt, and latterly strong westerly winds. _ , ~, . T The fine barque Agnes Holt, one of the New Zealand line, for which Messrs Tickle and Co. are agents, reached the port in the morning, and was subsequently towed to town. She has upwards of 400 tons of general cargo. Had a 14 days pas3age, arriving off the Heads on Fuday last. The brig Venture left Geelong on the Bth mst., clearing the Straits on the 12th. Has a full cargo, including a quantity of bonded goods. Proceeds to Ounediu to discharge. The brig Prairie is advertised as on the berth at Hobart Town for Otago, and the Cosmopolite for Auckland. The Lady Denison sailed on the 11th for Lyttdton, ~„,,. On the Bth instant, Ihe vessels m Hobart Town were gaily dressed with flags, in honor of the marriage of Captain Driver, of the barque Lombard. . The steamship Royal Standard, of the White Star Line, is now completing: her loading, and will leave for Liverpool on Friday next. The ship Accrington, from Canterbury, arrived at Calcutta on February sth. The celebrated Black Ball ship Lightning, from Melbourne for London, forty-seven days out was spoken by the Naval Reserve, on the 21st January, in lat. 26deg. S., long. 29deg. W.; all well. Captain Johnston reported having been twenty-nine days to Cape Horn, andhaving passed a great deal of ire. Since passing the Horn has had constant head winds, but Captain Johnston is sanguine of being home in time for the February wool sales. She was in company with the ship Sea Nymph, also bound for London. By the Adriatic, which has arrived at Melbourne from Mauritius, we learn that the Tampico had received orders to proceed to Auckland instead of that port. The Spanish war steamer Alava, from Cadiz with 800 troops, was disabled by a storm, and, having burst her toilers, put into a port in the Canary Islands. Subsequently a fire was disdi3covered in the hold in the coal, and the vessel was soon in flames, and as the flames endangered a powder magazine on shore, she was sunk, and will prove a total loss. With her went down 50,000 rations, 2,500 muskets, and 2,000 tents, alljintended for San Domingo. The adventures of Captain M'Grath, of the Grecian, are already locked upon as forming a pretty close parallel (in the minds of Hobartonians at least) to those of the famous Kidd and his redoußtable compatriots; but we did not think that the force of Tasmanian imagination would have gone so far as the endeavor to work out a similar sequel to the adventures of our romantic whaling Bkipper. We certainly had a good laugh the other day on hearing that a party of adult treasure-seekers had been exploring all the " nooks and crarnies'' of the old whaling brig of which we have heard so much lately, in the hopes of discovering the "plant" of the jovial M'Srath. Such an absurdity is scarcely to be credited, but it is true. It seems that when ordered to find bail on the occasion of the recent trials at Invercargill, the captain said that " he could find bail to any amount if he could get on board the ship." The steward heard him say so, and imported the remark to Tasmania, whereupon a vigorous search was instituted of the cabins and cabin nltings; in the forecastle, between the oil casks, a^d in every other possible and impossible place where mor.ey could be conveniently hidden, but without, success. We know not how far the re-

ports of the search, which have reached us, are4 true ; but we are informed that a policeman was stationed alongside the vessel while it was being executed, in case some explorer luckier than the rest, should have his cupidity excited, and skedaddle with the treasure ere his less fortunate companions could be made aware of its value.— " Hobart Town Mercury." The commander of a blockade runner usually gets LBOO a round trip from Bermuda or Nassau, and the privilege of purchasing 12 bales < f cotton for Lls a bale, which is worth L 75 at Liverpool It is only possible to make one trip during a moon from Bermuda, but two could be made from Nassau.' The risk to the commander is fearful, as the Federal cruisers are most dangerous to encounter. The instructions to commanders of blockade-runners are to sink their ships rather than let them be captured by the Federals. Each blockade runner is well provided with boats which can be lowered in a moment. These boats are provided with rowing and steering gear, and with ten days' provisions. When there is no chance for the escape of the ship at night, the crew scuttle her ana escape, if possible, in the boats; before the Federals can board the scuttled ship she is very often waterlogged or sunk. —" Times." A sunken rock has been discovered in King George's Sound. The following are the observations made by Mr H. K. Toll, Peninsular and Oriental Company's Service: — Distance from Michaelmas Island, about three-quarters of a mile. Water on rock, twenty-one feet. Bearings—Breaksea light, S.K. by B.; Limestone Head, B.S.W, westerly; Seal Island, S. W. by W.; Michaelmas Island, K. by a. By Mr Pretious, harbormaster :—Distance from Michaelmas Island, about three-quarters of a mile. Water on rock, twenty feet. Bearings—Seal Island, S.W. by W.: Bald Head, S. J W.; Breaksea light, S.E. by E. The Hobart Town "Mercury" of the 10th instant, states that "by the arrival of the Ariel, barge, from Recherche Bay, laft night, we learn that the Calypso was in the Bay, clean, on Sunday last. The whaling brig Victoria moved up to the anchorage off Passage Point, yesterday afternoon, where she will he oleaned up and painted previous to coming into harbor."
