TOWN BOARD.

A meeting of the Town Board was held yesterday afternoon, at the offices, in Princes street There were present—Messrs ii'Leod (in the chair , Kedmayne, Griffen, Turner, Lows, and

Barnes.

The minutes of the last meeting were rend and confirmed.

It was ordered that L 2 be paid to John Macinto h, who was certified by Caot. Rees to be the first to arrive with a cart-load of water on the occasion of the fire in the "Telegraph" newspaper office.

The Clkhk drew attention to the question of a rigbt:of-way formed for and used t>y Williams and Smith, Maclaggan street. The Board had passed a resolution some time ago, that unless a portion of the cost was repaid, the flagging should be pulled up, and the Clerk was row instructed to inform them that unless payment was at once made, action would be taken in the matter.

CORRESPONDENCE.

Mr E. Casper wrote asking that the Board would inform him of the proper gradient of Hope street, and also the street line. As he was about to builJ extensively, he would urge the necessity of the Board paving the street. It was ordered that the Clerk inform Mr Casper that the kerbing is permanently laid opposite his property;, that it is his duty, and not the Board's, to lay down pavement; and that! if he requires further information, he may obtain; it from the Engineer. \ ■ ,

Messrs ?earce and Packham applied for a. personal inspestion by members of the Board of '■■ the remaining portion of their Rattray street contract. There being so large a quantity of rock it was impossible to excavate it at their schedule price for earthwork; and they therefore prayed for a proportionate increase in price. In reply to questions, The Engineer said that the specification did not mention rockwork, but there was very little of ft, in proportion to the whole length of the! street. He wished some members of the Board' would satisfy themselves en the point. It was agreed that this should be done, and the consideration of the application was postponed for! a day. ■ ■' The Clerk said that there would he some*: thing left out of the amount allotted for the street after payment of the amount of the contract—probably L3OO to L4OO. Mr John Scoble, of George street, wrote askibg for permission to erect a verandah opposite, his shop. Mr Barnbs asked who authorised the erection of the thing opposite Messrs Ptekford'B, in Princes street. It was more like a big sign board or an additional story than a verandah.

The Engineer believed that permission had not been asked. Whether or not, it was a decided obstruction to the street.

The Chairman had a decided objection to permission being given at all. What would be done when the lamp-posts had to be erected 1

The Engineer said the difficulty had not yet; arisen; but if a verandah was existing at the; exact chainage where a post was to be placed,; it would have to be put on the water-channel. ' Permission was given to Mr Scoble, the verandah to bs constructed to the satisfaction of the Engineer. Mr J. J. Russell wrote asking for leave to remove fallen timber on the line of Lees-street. The.request was complied with—Mr Kussell to remove all stumps.

Mr E* M'GHashan forwarded a cheque for 1130 for work done in Union-strsefc, according to promise; and, in complia cc with his request, it was ordered that" a'Mil for the repayment of the amount should be returned, payable in October.

The Inspector of Nuisances reported that Mr G. Cook was removing soil from Union-street and alleged the permission of the Engineer. It was explained that some time since an oral permission was given by Mr Millar, jun., but that much more soil had been removed than was contemplated by that permission. It was resolved that Mr Cook be ordered to desist, at least for the present; and that -the Engineer should prepare a section »f the street. The tenders far cutting away parts of the embankment in Moray place, for making one set of steps and for fixing another, were opened, as follows : — John Pitsford £49 10 0 LonnieandCo 50 0 0 Joseph Smeeston 60 0 0 — O'Meagher 75 0 0 North and Scoular £79 4s or 70 0 0 The higher price in the last-named tender was for the use of Baltic, the latter for red pine. Mr Pitsford's tender was accepted. On the motion of Mr Griffen, it was resolved —" That 10 per cent, upon the amount of their tenders be paid by the contractors at the time their tenders are accepted by the Board."

BEP.OBT OF THE ENOINEEB. Mr Millar read the following report — " City Engineer's Department. " February 9th, 18P4. " Gentlemen—l have the honor to report that in Bell and Leith Wards I am getting the formation upon several of the transverse streets, running east and west of George street, made up from the excavation of other contracts, thereby materially reducing the cost upon each; seeing that by this course I leave little more for contractors to do save mere trimming. I have therefore to recommend that you empower: me to advertise at once for 3000 cube yards of metal for Leith Ward, and 1500 yards for Bell WaH, which miy be stacked up convenient to the several localities and subsequently carted and spread, either by day laljraror contract, as you may consider most advisable. te I have also to ask you to make provision to erect 20 or 30 more of the new jyas-lamp pillars. The timber piles required are value for 13s 6d each, and the lanterns for 30s. The latter may at any time be used for kerosene, where gas mains do not exist. The erection of these pillars can new be done comparatively free of cost by employing my chainmen during1 many odd hours when they are not required for survey duty.—-I have, &c, Jko. Millab, F.S.A., City Engineer." It was resolved that the recommendations of the Engineer be adopted, except that relating to the lanterns. :

The Board adjourned until to-day; whan the K.te appeals in the advertised list will be heard.
