WAKATIPO TRADE REPORT. (PROM OTJfI. OWN CORRESPOKDKNTr.) Were it not that those miners who intend wintering it out iv the ranges are laying in their supplies, trade in general would be at a'perfecf stand-still here. As it is, a great many parties are busily engaged iv procuring four or five mouths' supplies, and of conveying same to a secure place in the neighborhood pf their claims, near the Shotover River in particular.
Good roads and low cartage, in addition to a nominal freight across the Laka, had the natural effect of reducing: prices of every arliele on the field to a very low point. Competition is very keeu here. Prices of the most current articles even are varying considerably, and it is no easy matter to give anything like correct quotations The. following1, however, are wholesale quotations of goods mo3t in demand, carriage and freight included :— Flour, about LSO to L 55 per ton, or LG per bag of 200 lhs ; bacon and hams, from 2s Id to 2s 3d per lb, according to the brand; tea, Lli per lwlf chest, or LI 2 per chest; coffee, 2s Id per )b ; butter, 'is 9d per lb for prime Wellington ; cheese. is 6d par lb ; soap, Is ; salt, 6d; spiced beef, Is 3d peril). Tobacco is a great drug in the marker, and prices for tids article arc nominal, ranging from 6) to 7s per lb. Slops are abunlaut, and prices have Mien enormously. The same observation applies to hoots and walertig-hts.
Beer.-1, Wines, and Spirits.—Beer is rather scarce just now, but wines and spirits are as abundant as breadstuff?, and wholesale prices can hardly be arrived at.
Bulk ale jis worth L2O for go.id brands, and porter in bottles is saleable at 25s to 10s per dozen, but considerable orders for this artijle having gone down to town prices will give way must likely soon. Brandies 30s to 35s per gallon and L 4 to 1.4 10s per cisc ; via, L 4 per four gallon case, brand JDKZ ; whisky, 25x per gallon, and 70s per case j wines, 25s per gallon. Ironmongery is very plentiful, with the exception of Ames' shovels, which, though enquired for, are not to be had at all. Cordage is quite neglected, and even culioo has caused to be in demand, though it is selling as low as 2s 91 per yard.
