MEETING AT QUEENSTOWN.

A public meeting was held, at Bracken's Hotel to consider the best means of opening up a safe bridle-track with the Shotover, Skipper's, and adjoining diggings. A large number of the principal storekeepers, miners, and packers were present. Mr Moses was elected chairman,■: and stated that the object of the meeting was to open up the communication with the Shotover district, and to take advantage of the present fine weather to do so, and that while awaiting the assistance that would be rendered by the Government, which, he had no doubt, would be given, it would be necessary for those interested in the progress of-Queenstown to come forward and. advance some portion of the cost to aid in the object sought to be obtained. As this was not apolitical question, he considered that,both the Government and private perspns should assist in carrying out the object in aqujekand and efficient manner. . Mr M'Masters proposed—*' That thi3 meeting, seeing the immediate necessity that> exists for opening up the communication with the neighbouring, diggings, by practicable bridlptracks to the Shotover and Skipper's gully, are willing to do so by private subscription, and, pledge themselves, while waiting the Government assistance usually given to such purposes, to carry out this object by- funds subscribed." ;

Seconded by Mr Bracken, and carried unanimously. Proposed by Mr Casey and seconded by Mr Woods—" That a committee be appointed to collect moneys, examine the road, draw out specifications, issue tenders, and do all such work as may be necessary to carry out these objects." Carried. ' Proposed by Mr Bruce, seconded by Mr Green —','Th.at the committee be requested to correspond with the Government to reimburse all moneys expended, and should they do so, the same to be refunded to the subscribers pro rata, or to be expended on such other works as a meeting of subscribers, called for that purpose; may decide upon." Carried. . Proposed by iVIr Wood and seconded by Mr M'Donald—" That a copy of the above resolu r tioris !be forward to Mr Wood, the commissioner, for transmission to the Government, and that he be requested to give every assistanca in forwarding the objects -of the ■ meeting."
