WRECK OF THE CITY OF SYDNEY.

Sydxet, Saturday. At twelve o'clock, the City of Sydney rounded Gabo Island, the night being clear and the wind light. The captain retired at a quarter-past twelve. A little before two o'clock the first officer called him up, the weather having become foggy, tt was supposed that they were then three miles off Green Cipe, and the captain, for greater security, directed "an alteration of the course—one point offshore. He had gone affc to look at watch, when the alarm was given, " 3re:ik-" ers ahead." He called' to stop her, and back her, bub immediately she struck, aud all effort* to get her off proved fruitless. All the passengers and crew were got ashore without any confusion, Captains Gerrard and Ashmore rendering great assistance, The vessel filled and went down as the last boat with the captain (who had to be forced from the wreck) lett her. A party went to Twofold Bay in four boats and sent food, &c, to the others in which they were promptly aided by the authorities and the people of Eden. The Hunter steamer, sent for from Meutnbula, cime round and brought all on to Sydney. The passengers have lost everything but the clothes on their backs, except Lynch and Dickson, who saved their rifles at the ri«k of their lives Captain Moodiehas publicly advertised his thanks to Captains Garrard and Ashmore, to Mr Solomon and to the authorities of Eden, for their great aid, and to Alfred Eggers, one of the crew, who swam ashore and secured the hawser to the clifts ; and also expressed his admiration of the calm behaviour of all, especially the ladies. All the passengers have joined in a published address to Captain Moodic, to whose calmness, presence of mind and judgement, they attribute under Providence, the saving of their lives : and also expressing their strong sympathy and unabated confidence in him as a commander. The vessel was uninsured.
