ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE.

CHOLERA. (To the Editor of the Daily Times.)

Sir,- So much excitement prevails through tha town respscting the death of Mr Erlam, that I deem ifc a duty to allay what we may reasonably hope will prove a needless alarm.. Dr Waters, who attended the case conjointly with myself have no doubt as to its real nature. The patient astated in your impression of yesterday, rallied to a great extent, and we entertained hopes of his recovery ; the collapse, however, recurred twice, and notwithstanding1 our incessant attention the patient sank rapidly from pure exhaustion. Dr Waters and myself alternated our attendance, remaining with the patient for an hour each time, indeed, this was demanded by the gravity of the disease. We trust that the case is one of a sporadic nature, and will not extend. By the term sporctdic ;is understood a disease of epidemic nature which is isolated, appearsina single individualand then dies away, and does not extend itself amongst masses of individuals. This opinion is founded on the fact that the patient suffered for some time previously from chronic diarrhsea. I may mention thai both JDr. Waters and myself have had full opportunities of witnessing undoubted cases ot the disease—the former, during the epidemic in London, and myself in Newcastle about ten years since, at which time the town was almost decimated. I mention tins fact to show that our joint opinion is of worth, and should not be questioned. ' It was stated yesterday, that no cases had been met with south of the equator. I need only instance the Mauritius Island to the contrary. Through the medium of the Baily Times, I have thrice drawn the public attention to the great want of proper drainage, and of a proper supply of pare water in Dunedin ; and this withbut little effect. Let us earnestly turn our attention to these matters whilst the opportunity remain. I believe a company to supply us with the latter requirement is already on foot, and too much encouragement to the project cannot be given. Two weeks ago, I mentioned that a cheap and efficacious filter might bz made by mixing together burnt sand and ehalcoal, stilchin«- the mixture up in a small bag, and by a little ingenuity so arranging it that water might percolate into a receiver beneath. As a matter of precaution all cases of diarrhoea should be attended to withoutdelay—twenty drops of laudanum in a little brandy proving very effitfacioiis. The public, it 13 to be hoped will continue unalarmed. I most sincerely trust that the occurrence of thi3 case wiil at ontv draw attention to our sanitary state. I remain, Sir, - Yours very obedientyly, MORT.A.ND HOCKEY, Princes-street, November 15th, 1832.
