COROMANDEL.
The following private letter has been placed in our hands for publication. The writer, who went to Coromandel lately from Otago, is an experienced miner, having worked in California and Victoria with some success. We may add, that he is known to the editor of this journal:—
Auckland, March 7, 1862. Dear Friend,- —I arrived here last Sunday. We have all been sadly disappointed as regards gold mining, but we are not the only ones, There are parties out prospecting furnished by the Government, but nothing more than the "color" has been obtained as yet. A great number of miners have been to " Coromandel, and they speak rather discouragingly of it. We are going there, probably to-morrow or Monday. Simmons is at Coromandel. The Government lias not come to terms aa yet with the Maories, but they expect before long to do so. Where the' parties are prospecting (Coromandel) is on Government land, and the ifoories will not let the diggers prospect on their land. It is all a " cod " about Coromandel being thrown oven, and I wish you tp tell all my friends so. There is no use in jnen coming here in expectation of finding » goldfield working. The Government offer 4J2000 reward for a payable goldfield. There are 150 diggers knocking about town who do not know which way to go (Victoria or Otago). Some of them have been here about two months.
' As regards the town of Auckland, its a sight worse than ever Dunedin was for amusement—not even a free- and easy—it's iike a grave-yard. The Government will not allow concert or dance roomslot of hypocrites. In the event of any of our crowd discovering anything, I shall let you know the first opportunity, so you may depend on me in case any gold is discovered payable. With kind regards to all friends, I remain, yours sincerely, Daniel B. O'Hara.
