The Castlemaine Theatre was to open on Monday evening, the 10th iust, when M M. Pous-sai-d, Douay, Fleury, and the Creed Royal Family, were to inaugurate a dramatic season. Mr. Duffy and Mr. 1 .igar had arrived on their way to the AVimmera, to reconnoitre if there be nny land thereabouts adapted- for agriculture. The Castlemaine police have been the last to pronounce on the question of reduced pay—not from indecision, but for want of opportunity.. Their January pay was not issued until threeweeks after it became due! . ; The puddlers on Golden Gully, having run very short of water, have applied to the Resident Warden forpermission to make use ofthecontents of the Crocodile Gully Reservoir, and Mr. Heron, having corresponded with the Commissioner ot Public Works on the subject—has received authority to grant the request of the miners. The absurd order of the manager of the Bank of Victoria, commanding the bank officials to shave off their moustaches, is causing some merriment. Hitherto, only two junior clerks have obeyed the order. . (From Bendigo Advertiser.) Two prisoners had escaped from the lock-up, prior to their being placed in the dock. They escaped through the floor into the cellar. Three thousand ounces of gold have been obtained from four tons of stone at Mountain In the claim of Eversham and Company on Monument Hill, some very rich stone has been struck. The claims along the hftc, which had been abandoned; are again being eagerly applied for to the Municipal Council, the ground being within the Municipality. . The sludge which overflows the mam Murray road at King's Bridge was so deep, lately, that it reached above the knees of the horses in the ditfercnt vehicles that had to pnss that way. Mr. Frank Taite, of the Oriental Bank, banahurstj was about to be transferred to the Castlemaine branch of the above institution, and Mr. Anderson, from the head office, is appointed to fill up the vacancy caused by his removal. The mining items from the Bendigo district are as followß :—The Union Company's mills on the Sheepshead Reef are stopped during a general rent ; the under-ground workings, timberings &c, are meanwhile most industriously carried on. The Red, White, and Blue Company keep on breaking out, and crushing stone of varying thickness, but all far above the working expenses. On the Private Escort Reef some two, or three claims are being worked with energy. The Auld Reekie Company are getting out stone at 35 ■ feet, from a reef about 2 feet thick, the last crushing from which went about 2 ounces. The shaft is sunk to 90 feet, at which point stone was cut, but the water prevented its being successfully worked. On New Chum Reef, the Company's works have been suspended since the sth February, pending the establishment of some system of drainage being introduced,-it being also determined to clear off all outstanding liabilities, and then commence as it were de novo. The tip or embankment across Golden Gully is being steadily proceeded with from the south side, and a junction maybe expected to be formed ■with the embankment from the north side in a few months.
