Meeting. AT A SPECIAL GENERAL MEETING of the residents in the Nortk-East Harbor Peninsula, held at the School-room, N.E. Harbor, on Thursday, 6th Feb., 1862, Mr. William- Bacon, • of Portobello. in the Chair, the following resolutions were unanimously adopted :— Ist—-" That the settlers in the Peninsula have good cause for dissatisfaction, at the marked neglect with which their interests have hitherto been treated at the hands of the Government —neglect which must ho attributed chiefly to the isolated position of the settlers—to the want of any attempt at co-operation among themselves—and to their too great reliance upon the professions of those in authority—of which allegations the force is apparent in the fact, that although it is now four years since the Provincial Council voted money for the construction of a main line frotn Dunedin to the Heads via Portobello—the work to all practical intents and purposes remains in stdtu quo, and this, notwithstanding the Provincial Council every session going through the farce of voting the money." 2nd—•" Tliat notwithstanding the numerous population settled throughout the Peninsula, and the large amount contributed by them to the land fund, and the still larger amount which that fund will derive, as (ioon as the Peninsula is opened up by the road line above referred to—-the whole amount expended on roads since the foundation of the settlement does not exceed somewhere about £300, and consequently the settlers are subjected to hardships to which they would not have bean exposed in any other district in the Province —virtually excluded as they are from both church and market." 3rd—" Tliat with a view to remedying this state of things, and of inducing the Executive to implement the vote of the Provincial Council, by at once proceeding with the main line of road, at least as far as Portobello—a committee be 7iow formed, with injunctions to procure the influence of the M. P. C.'s in general, and of those for the district in particular, to the intent that the same may be brought to bear upon the immediate prosecution of the work. Committee to consist of —Messrs. Christie, Bacon, Popham, Macauley, Edwards, Young, Greenfield, Douglas, Robertson, Captain Ridley, Morris, Double, Morison, Inglis, Graut, Seaton, Winton, M'Lelland, Reynolds, Sliand, Sim, Braid, aud Captain Nicol, with power to add to their number. Mr. Greenfield to bo convener." 4th—■" Tliat the foregoing committee be requested to point out to the Government the waste of public money which lias been involved in the laying oft' the road line, as it has been already constructed, and the expediency in laying off a bush road, of the surveyor taking advantage of the local knowledge of the settlers, who have long been cognizant of the physical conformation of the country, and that the advice of such members of thecommittee aa are so acquainted witli the Peninsula be respectfully tendered." oth—"lt having been surmised that the only reason assigned by the Government for having at first suspended the work, and for subsequently neglecting to resume it, is an alleged scarcity of labor. The committee is hereby empowered, on behalf of the settlers, to offer to find the requisite labor at market rates, the meeting being perfectly satisfied that any number of hands could have bsen procured long ago, had any effort been made to find them.','1 6 th —" That while deprecating any attempt to coerce the independent judgment of our representatives, this meeting, in the event of the Executive Government persisting in its neglect or refusal to give effect to the oft-repeated vote of the Provincial Council by at once proceeding with the work in question, hereby calls upon the representatives of the district, either to vote absolutely for the removal of the Government, or to resign their seats in the Provincial Council, in which demand the meeting ventures confidently to solicit the sympathy and co-operation of the electors in the Eastern District." 7th —" That a copy of the foregoing resolutions be transmitted by the Chairman to His Honor the Superintendent, to Messrs. Healy, Martin, and Walker, M.P.C.'s for the District; and also that they be inserted in the Otago Colonist and Daily Times, with a respectful request that the respective editors may, on public grounds, support the object of the meeting."
