To the Editor of The Otago Daily Times. Dimedin, 27th Dec, 1861. Sir,—When at the New River a few days ago, Captain Steuart of the s.s. "Oscar" asked me to contradict, on my return to Dunedin, a report he had just seen mentioned in your paper of 20th December, to the effect that he had represented to the passengers from Melbourne by his steamer, that their best route to the digging's lay through Invercargill. Captain Steuart expressed himself greatly surprised and annoyed at finding- such a report current. He denies indignantly and emphatically having ever given any grounds for it, and considers of course, to be ridiculous!, an opinion that the route in question is a better one than that via Port Chalmers. I am, &c, J. Rattray.
