The " Alma " with 256 passengers cleared out for Otago on the 19th Dec.; the " Queen of Perth " saileufromHobson'sßay, for Otago, Dec. 19th; the " Frowning Beauty" sailed from Sydney, for Otago, 19th December. ' ■ ■ The s.s. " Phoenix" made her trial trip from Dunedin to the port on Tuesday. In consequence of a slight defect in the boiler, her engine could not be worked at full power, and as it was blowing pretty fresh from the north-east, her progress was not rapid ; but we have no doubt, when her repairs are properly completed, she will prove a quick boat. Her engine works very smoothly, and there is almost an entire absence of vibration from the motion of the screw. Her cabin is commodious and comfortable, and will be a great convenience to lady passengers. The " Lady Barldy" built expressly for the Otago trade was to sail for this port on Saturday, 21st Dec, under the command of Captain Wyse, (of " Hotham" notoriety). This vessel may be expected daily. The Christclrarch Press, of Saturday,. Dec. 14, says: _" On Wednesday, the Council resolved that a fast steamer should be laid on to Dunedin, to remain only 24 hours in each harbour; and that a contract made with Messrs. Miles, and signed, though the Council was actually in session, icithout consulting #—torun a steamer fortnightly to Akaroa, Timaru, and Oamaru, shall be altered and be extended to Dunedin.
