Received October 19. at 7.30 p.m. LONDON, October IS. The police barracks at Euan, near Emu's. were attacked and burned, ale policeman being killed and two wounded. Fitzgerald, the dead hunger-striker, who fasted 68 days, was engaged to< be married. His sweetheart endeavored to have; the marriage ceremony performed in prison a week ago, but the authorities negatived the proposal. The relatives were allowed to remove the body. The Lord Mayor of Cork, who is hunger-striking, is developing scurvy, Received October 19. at 10.30 p.in. LONDON, October IS. Alderman McSweeney, the hungerutriking Lord Mayor of Cork, is visibly weakening and shows symptoms of scurvy. A specialist has been called m. Alderman McSweeney sent a message to the relatives of Fitzgerald: 'No tears but joy. He died for his country." Another Cork hunger-striker, who has fasted 70 days, is reported in a [ precarious state. [ (Reuter's Telegrams.) Received October 19, at 3.5 p.m. ROME, October 18. The Vatican is besieged with appeals on behalf of McSweeney. Some, like. Father Bernard Yaughan, contending that McSweeney is committing suicide and is therefore sinning against the laws of God and man, beg the Pope to condemn McSweeney. Others, who compare liim with the martyr St. Eusebius, desire the Popo to accept this view, and move the British Government to release him. The Vatican has submitted the matter to the Congregation of Holy Office, which, however, generally takes years to pronounce a i verdict.
