THE LOCAL MARKETS

Oamaru Mail Office, Monday morning. Things have been exceedingly quiet in the local grain and produce market during the week. A few small lots of wheat, the clearing up of barns, eanre forward, and were readily accepted at full, rates. ■-■' Oats are now in few hands in the country, and holders have shown no desire to sell, being probably under the impression that prices will go higher before the new crop comes■^Js£n\e;;-three-oi- four months hence. sale that we have heard of week was a modest line of Gartons of milling quality, for which 4s 2d net. was given at a handy station. The speli of fine weather having facilitated the shelling of cowgrass, several lots came on the market, during the week, and met with ready sale. For one particularly good well-cleaned sample 2s net was given with delivery in Oamaru. Other lots changed hands at ls-10-Jd, Is lid. and Is ll^d. A little business was done in oatcusheaf chaff at £6 5s net on trucks. The season for handling potatoes is at its close, and only small odd lots arebeing dealt in, the price paid being £9 net on trucks. There.has been more business passing in sheep, for which a good demandi exists, though the weather, strong drying winds, experienced at the end of the week gave some check to inquiry. However, yesterday's compensating rain has put a. changed aspect on the outlook, and the demand will be revived. Ewes and lambs are now becoming fit for removal, and several . lines were sold, chief amongst them being two of 000 each of full and failing-mouthed; ewes, which brought 18s all counted in one case and 16s in tub other. There is some irregularity in the condition of the ewes, and prices vary accordingly. The all-counted prices realised were as follows-:—Mixed four, six, and eight-tooth ewes with lambs. 21s 6d: sound-mouthed ewes. 225; full-mouthed ewes. 20s: failiug-mouthed ewes, from 13s to 19s. Fat sheep are in greater demand than supply, and prices have hardened very considerably, fat ewes having been sold at 48s,* 50s, 555, and 57s 6d. Other sales of sheep mainly comprised hoggets', one line of 800 mixed sexes changing hands at 27s '6d, while other smaller lines of mixed sexes, brought 30s and 3ls, and ewe hoggets, which are much in favor, were sold at 31s 6d. 33s 6d. and 34s according to quality. For a line of 500 fat and forward wethers 36s was given, and dry ewes were sold at 225. There is a general shortage of fatcattle, and prime bullocks and prime cows are in great request at entranced prices. As a- consequence bullocks in forward condition and empty cows are Ln demand with few sellers. Other cattle also sell well, especially kinds that can be transformed into weighty beef animals. The sales of the week were many, but not of noteworthy size, and the; prices were as follows: —Prime fat bullocks, £22 and £24: light-weight fat bullocks."£.l6 to £18; heavv-weight fat cows. £l2 to £l4; light-weight fat cows. £10: fat.-steers,. £l9;,fat heifers. £l2: three-year-old steers in forward condition, £l6; two-year-old steers, £l3; mixed 2-J and two-year-old steers. £10: mixed ages steers and heifers, £7 18s 6d: 18-months-O'ld mixed sexes, £6: yearlings, £2 N los and £2 15s.

THE DUNEDTN MARKETS. (Otago Daily Times.) The bulk "of wheat held for spring threshing has now been threshed, and millers have taken tip all lines of good milling at the Government price. The demand for oats from Australia, has fallen c-ff, but on the there have been increased inmifwiSlfrom North Island merchants, apparently covering their fonvarH sales. Few lines have been offering-bv-_grow-ers, and as local light stocks the demand prices. B grade Gartens are to-day worth 4-s lid, f.0.b., s.i. Prices paid, to growers are 4s to< 4-s 2d per bushel, sacks extra, on trucks, according to samnle.

The chaff inarkct is firm in sympathy with oats, and consignments arriving are readily placed at £7 to £7 5s per ■ ton. sacks extra, ex truck, for good pua.litv! There have been inquiries for shipping, but owing to lack of sparelittln"business has resulted. Poor and medium quality is neglected, "and reduced rates have to be accepted in order to make a clearance.-. v'-*-. ■ The-potato market is easier, and the only business-'-.passing is for local consumption, ns the North Island is''now being supplied with.new potatoes.
