THE STRIKE-BREAKING CLAUSE.
By Telegraph. (Special to the Oamaru Mail.) WELLINGTON, November- 1, When the Coal-mines Bill was before- the Legislative. Council what is known as the strike-breaking clause was amended in the direction of empowering the Government to appoint one or more Supreme Court Judges as a commission to investigate and report as fo- the advisablcness 'or otherwise of placing men other than fullv-experienced coal miners at work in coal-mines in time of strike. The -Minister of Public Works urged the House to accept the.amendment, contending that it was a big improvement on the provision: he inserted when tiie Bill was before the ■House leaving the strike-breaking action to one judge or th-tf Minister of Mines. The Labor members opposed the alteration, again urging the House ;o reject anything in the shape of making it possible to introduce free and inexperienced labor in coalmines. When the Council amendment was put the House agreed to it on the voices.
