COLUMBA CHURCH.
ANNIVERSARY SERVICES
Columba Church ■'■ anniversary services were largely attended yesterday. The preacher 'at tho morning and evening services was the Rev. Professor Hewitson, 8.A.. Yna-sterof Knox College, and Mr HewTtson . also addressed the scholars of the Sunday School during the afternoon.
At the morning service the rev. gentleman, emphasised the importance of home training on the life of the child, basing his remarks on the text, "They brought imto Him also infante" (Luke xviii., 15). Mr Hewitson deprecated the idea that boys could be allowed' to drift downhill until they reached the age of sixteen or eighteen years and then turned uphill again, it might perhaps be a hard thing for a. father to 'discourse on. deep subjects with'his children, but the father made it harder by waiting until his children were grown itp. Home training was the responsibility of the parents, not of the minister. The preacher exhorted his hearers not to overlook the efficacy of prayer in the establishment of a system" of religious training in the home. The afternoon address was one for the chldreh principally. Mr Hewitson was attentively listened to by the young peqple, who were exhorted to cast their burdens Upon the Lord._ In the evening the Rev. Professor Hewitson spoke from the text, '.'Sit ye here while I go and pray yonder" (Matthew xxvi., 3G). The preacher drew a "vivid picture of the frailties that beset human nature, and of the sympathy exhibited by Christ for those who Hero sorrow-laden and bowed down.
Special anthems were rendered by the choir at morning and evening services. Mr Fcrgusson, A.T.C.L. presided at the organ.
